HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – On Memorial Day, we honor the men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our great nation. As we honor and pay tribute to those that gave all, we also honor those who place their lives in danger each day in deployed locations around the world in defense of our nation.

Memorial Day also signifies the traditional start of the summer season. We should all rededicate ourselves to safety and risk management by taking care of one another, as well as our families, this weekend and throughout the year.

Many of you will take advantage of this well-deserved weekend by spending time traveling or participating in outdoor recreation and sports. Please take the appropriate risk mitigation steps. This may include the proper wear of motorcycle personal protective equipment, safe driving practices, safe hiking practices and responsible use of alcohol.

Leaders and supervisors at every level should ensure members of their organization receive a safety briefing and are reminded of summer hazards.

I am counting on you to remain focused on safety this Memorial Day weekend. Drive defensively, be cognizant of driver distractions, use seat belts and do not drink and drive.

Remember, your safety is everyone’s responsibility, especially yours. The bottom line is for each of us to look out for one another.

My family joins me in extending to all of you and your families our very best wishes for a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend.
