HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – Base officials will host a wreath-laying observance with remarks here Sept. 10 beginning at 8:30 a.m. to remember the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

The ceremony will take place at the POW/MIA Monument on the corner of Barksdale and Grenier Streets. The event is open to all those with base access.

“We must never forget the horrific events that took place that day,” said Bobby Jacques, the event’s organizer.

Hanscom Assistant Fire Chief Jason Garcia and Captain Dale Smith will speak during the event. Among the nearly 3,000 people killed that day were 343 firefighters.

Organizers will observe the times hijacked aircraft crashed into the north and south towers, the Pentagon and in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The Hanscom Middle School choir will sing the national anthem.

Col. Katrina Stephens, the installation commander, has designated the ceremony as an alternate duty location.

After the remembrance event, attendees will be given a carnation to lay near the wreath.

Members of the 66th Security Forces Squadron will reroute traffic away from the area beginning at 8:15 a.m. until the conclusion of the ceremony.
