HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – Base officials will host a base-wide cleanup event here May 17.

Military personnel are asked to take time cleaning around their facilities from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Civilians may also participate on a voluntary basis if on an approved leave status.

“We ask that all volunteers work with their facility managers and take a few moments of their day to clean up around their facilities,” said Lt. Col. Joshua Shimko, 66th Air Base Group deputy commander.

The 66th Civil Engineering Division will provide biodegradable bags for organic waste such as leaves, twigs and pulled weeds. Organizers ask that the filled biodegradable bags be placed curbside for pick up no later than 2 p.m. on May 17. Limbs/branches too large to fit in bags may be placed at the curb with the bags.

CE officials ask that plastic trash bags be used for non-organic waste and thrown in non-recycling dumpsters only.

“The cleanup day is a great opportunity for everyone to work together and make a difference in the appearance of the base,” said Shimko. “By working together, we can make a significant impact on the cleanliness and beauty of our base following a long winter.”

Biodegradable and plastic trash bags, along with rakes that can be signed out, may be picked up at the U-Fix-Store at building 1833 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Safety officials ask those participating to consider risk management.

“Cleaning up around your facilities may seem like a simple task. However, it’s important to remember that safety should always come first,” said Chris Herrmann, 66 ABG Safety director. “By utilizing risk management strategies, we can ensure that our clean up day is not only effective, but also keeps all involved out of harm’s way.”
