Conversion continues for Government Travel Cards

No matter where someone works or what they do, they have more than likely dealt with change. One recent adjustment that is affecting many personnel is the conversion from the Controlled Spending Account back to the Government Travel Card.

The GTC is a travel card used by Department of Defense personnel to pay for all costs related to official government travel, which is defined as under competent orders while performing duties pertaining to official government assignments, such as temporary duty and permanent change of station.

Anyone with a CSA will be affected by the change and should have received notification via email and a letter from Citibank explaining the change process. Nothing will need to be accomplished by users as long as all required training has been completed.

The required training is the Travel Card 101 course which can be found on www.defensetravel.dod.mil/passport.

"There were some complications with the CSA and it didn't work like originally planned," said Senior Airman Joshua Williams, 66th Comptroller Squadron customer service technician. "Members who were traveling would run into problems such as not having funds or improper split disbursement. The GTC concept is relatively easy to understand and members are generally familiar with the process already."

The conversion for Air Force Materiel Command ended Sept. 30 and all CSA accounts should now be in the GTC format.

For any users that do not currently have access but need a GTC for official travel, the process starts with an application. Applicants can choose to allow Citibank to run a credit report and if in good standing, the standard spend limit of $7,500 per month will be issued. If applicants choose not to allow Citibank to run a report, or if their credit is in poor standing, a $4,000 limit will be issued.

"The GTC is always 100 percent travel ready," said Williams. "There should be no more frustration with not having funds loaded to the CSA and for personnel having to pay out of pocket for expenses."
