Hanscom's Fitness and Sports Center will implement 24/7 fitness access to eligible users soon, 66th Force Support Squadron officials announced recently.

Among those eligible include active duty military and their dependents, Defense Department civilians and National Guard and Reserve service members.

"The Hanscom Fitness and Sports Center is critical to each service member's fitness and resiliency," said Jerry Turnbow, Fitness and Sports Center director. "For personnel who work unusual hours and may not have been able to get to the fitness center during standard operating times, they are now able to focus on fitness more conveniently."

For those who wish to use the facility after hours when the facility will be unmanned by fitness center staff, the director says registration is required.

"Eligible users age 18 and older will have access only after they read and sign a Statement of Understanding and return it to the Fitness Center for an orientation," said Turnbow. "The statement will outline the rules to be followed when using the facility after normal hours of operation."

Established rules will make sure safety remains a top priority.

"Our main focus is ensuring the well-being of all patrons using the facility," Turnbow said.

To help with that, Turnbow suggests having a wingman during late-night workouts.

"I strongly encourage people to workout with a wingman," he said. "A wingman can assist quickly in the event of an emergency or any equipment malfunction."

He added that a wingman must also complete the Statement of Understanding before using the facility after hours.

Not all areas will be available during the unmanned times.

"Those areas that are available to customers during the 24/7 access include the cardiovascular room, main gymnasium, upstairs stretching area, upstairs track and two bowling center's hallway locker rooms," the fitness center director said.

Areas that are not available during this time will be locked or clearly marked as restricted. Among the areas off- limits during the 24/7 operations are the upstairs free weight room, Warrior Fitness aerobic gym, bowling alley, Resiliency Center, family fitness room, climbing wall, tennis bubble and the main locker rooms.

The 24/7 access will not be implemented until the facility's camera surveillance system is installed and operational. Turnbow expects that to happen in the next two weeks.
