8/10/2011 - HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- Aug. 26 is designated as Women's Equality Day throughout the country. Recently, Col. Stacy L. Yike, 66th Air Base Group commander, signed a proclamation declaring this same day as Women's Equality Day on base.

Although the day of the observance falls on Aug. 26, a luncheon will be held the day prior on Aug. 25 at 11 a.m. in the Concord Room of the Hanscom Conference Center.

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley will be the special guest speaker at the luncheon. Ms. Coakley is the first woman to serve as the attorney general for the state and has done significant advocacy work for victims of child abuse and sexual assault.

Women's Equality Day celebrates the passage of the 19th Amendment to the constitution in 1920, which guaranteed women the right to vote. This year's observance will incorporate the theme "Women's Rights, Then and Now," which was selected by the Women's Equality Day committee.

Everyone with access to Hanscom is welcome to attend the luncheon. Tickets are $8 and include a sandwich, chips and soda or water. Tickets will be on sale through Aug. 22.

Tickets may be purchased from: Alyssa Feola in Building 1612 at 781-377-7224, Karen Noreik in Building 1618 at 781-377-0204, Anne Meffan in Building 1607 at 781-377-9350, Robyn Haerr in Building 1600 at 781-377-6078, Maureen Remeika in Building 1606 at 781-225-1723 or Shelia Hollman for all other buildings at 781-377-3013.
