Nearly 50 years after it was originally delivered, Tim Martin, 66th Security Forces Squadron administrative assistant to the commander, performs Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech for the Hanscom community at a commemoration service, held at the Base Chapel on Jan. 15. Dr. King delivered the speech, arguably his most famous, on August 28, 1963 in Washington, D.C., as part of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, a peaceful civil rights demonstration. HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- Chief Master Sgt. Kenneth Williams, Electronic Systems Center and 66th Air Base Wing command chief, and Master Sgt. Jamie Williams, 66th Medical Group first sergeant, speak at Hanscom's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Service, held Jan. 15 at the Base Chapel. During his speech, Chief Williams echoed the desire for increased unity and understanding among all Americans that Dr. King expressed in his "I Have a Dream" speech. "Keeping the spirit moving will redefine how Americans define 'we.' We must work diligently to instill the spirit of achievement, forgiveness and togetherness in our children," the chief said. "Let us join together to continue the hard but critical work of reconciliation and justice to build a multicultural America in which our notions of community and the people called 'we' expands to include everyone." HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – Col. David Orr, 66th Air Base Wing commander, is joined by members of the Hispanic Heritage Committee as he signs a proclamation in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. Members of the committee pictured with Colonel Orr are front row, from left to right, Lola Garcia-Lewis, Staff Sergeant Marcos Garcia, Master Sergeant Carlos Cameron, Senior Master Sergeant Raul Ruiz and Senior Airman Nicole Barajas. The Hanscom Hispanic Heritage Month committee has put together a number of events and activities in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month that runs through Oct. 15. The following activities are open to the entire Hanscom community: Sept. 22: Social pot luck lunch at the Base Chapel Annex from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., for more information contact Staff Sgt. Marcos Garcia at (781) 377-2315; Sept. 25: Family Hispanic night at the Youth Center. Call the Youth Center at (781) 377-3739 for more information. The Hispanic Heritage Month Committee will host Salsa Lessons every Wednesday at the Minuteman Club through Oct. 14, from 5 to 6 p.m. The lessons are open to all adults on base. HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. –First Lt. Mike Sciortino of the 66th Medical Group speaks to the crowd gathered at the Heritage of Freedom event on July 16 at the Aero Club hangar. Lieutenant Sciortino spoke about his experiences serving as a combat controller in Afghanistan where he earned the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service.
