Robert Swain, 439th Airlift Wing commander at Westover Air Reserve Base, Mass., recites the oath of enlistment to a group of Air Force Reserve initial enlistees and recruiters Oct. 5 on board the U.S.S. Constitution docked at the Navy Yard in Charlestown, Mass. The Airmen originate from across the New England and New York regions. The U.S.S. HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – Col. David Orr, 66th Air Base Wing commander, is joined by members of the Hispanic Heritage Committee as he signs a proclamation in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. Members of the committee pictured with Colonel Orr are front row, from left to right, Lola Garcia-Lewis, Staff Sergeant Marcos Garcia, Master Sergeant Carlos Cameron, Senior Master Sergeant Raul Ruiz and Senior Airman Nicole Barajas. The Hanscom Hispanic Heritage Month committee has put together a number of events and activities in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month that runs through Oct. 15. The following activities are open to the entire Hanscom community: Sept. 22: Social pot luck lunch at the Base Chapel Annex from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., for more information contact Staff Sgt. Marcos Garcia at (781) 377-2315; Sept. 25: Family Hispanic night at the Youth Center. Call the Youth Center at (781) 377-3739 for more information. The Hispanic Heritage Month Committee will host Salsa Lessons every Wednesday at the Minuteman Club through Oct. 14, from 5 to 6 p.m. The lessons are open to all adults on base. Heritage of Freedom

HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. –Morley Piper, a World War II veteran speaks during the Heritage of Freedom event on July 16, about his D-Day experiences as a 19 year old lieutenant in the 29th Infantry Division on June 6, 1944. Mr. Piper was a platoon leader in a rifle company assigned to the 115th Regiment where he led 30 men into battle on Omaha Beach and engaged the enemy through France and into Germany up until the end of World War II. The Heritage of Freedom event also included 1st Lt. Mike Sciortino of the 66th Medical Group who described how he earned the Bronze Star and Purple Heart working as a combat controller in Afghanistan. (U.S. Air Force photo by Mark Herlihy)
