HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – Dr. Susumu Ito (standing) speaks about his experiences during World War II to a crowd in the atrium of Building 1624 on May 19. Dr. Ito was drafted in 1940 and received a battlefield commission to second lieutenant. He was a forward observer for the 442nd field artillery. During the Battle for the Lost Battalion in Italy in 1943, the company that he was attached to lost 132 men out of 143. Susumu was one of 11 that survived. Mr. Testsuo Takayanagi (sitting in front) also spoke about his experiences during the war. In 1941 he was taken to the relocation camp in Topaz, Utah. He then volunteered for the U.S. Army where he was trained in military intelligence and served in Gen. McArthur’s headquarters in the Philippines. Mr. Takayanagi later served with the U.S. occupational forces in Japan, north of Tokyo near Nikko, to provide interpretation.
