RQ-7 Shadow

An RQ-7 Shadow unmanned aerial vehical is equipped with the world's smallest synthetic aperture radar for airborne improvised explosive device detection. The Counter-IED Branch team from Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass., integrated four aircraft with a lightweight Ku band and ultra-wide, ultra-high frequency SAR, which will allow the system to provide threat detection capabilities to dismounted troops and route clearance patrols. Counter IED

An explosive ordnance disposal member scans the soil using a Vallan "Minehound" VMR2 metal detector during an operational utility event at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Panama City, Fla. The detector uses ground penetrating radar to locate low to non-metallic mines that can elude traditional metal detectors. The Counter-Improvised Explosive Device Branch -- a Life Cycle Management Center team based out of Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass. -- was respnosible for equipping 36 deployed Air Force EOD teams with the latest handheld detectors. HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- Retired Lt. Gen. Melvin F. (Nick) Chubb, Jr., passed away July 25, 2014, after a short illness. Chubb commanded what was then the Air Force’s Electronic Systems Division at Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass., from August 1984 until his retirement on Oct 1, 1988. During his tenure at Hanscom, he oversaw development of the Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System, better known as Joint STARS, and many other accomplishments. (File photo)
