An RQ-7 Shadow unmanned aerial vehical is equipped with the world's smallest synthetic aperture radar for airborne improvised explosive device detection. The Counter-IED Branch team from Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass., integrated four aircraft with a lightweight Ku band and ultra-wide, ultra-high frequency SAR, which will allow the system to provide threat detection capabilities to dismounted troops and route clearance patrols. An explosive ordnance disposal member scans the soil using a Vallan "Minehound" VMR2 metal detector during an operational utility event at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Panama City, Fla. The detector uses ground penetrating radar to locate low to non-metallic mines that can elude traditional metal detectors.
