Heroes Memorial park nominations now open

HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- Every October the Hanscom community gathers to honor and dedicate a lasting memorial to deceased individuals who, during their time here, made a lasting contribution to the success of Hanscom and its people.

The park, built in 1991, serves as a living monument to deceased members of the Hanscom family who served the base community.

"Since many of those who lived and worked here at Hanscom and have since passed away are usually buried in their hometown, the park serves as an important connection and helps in closure for those friends and family left behind," said Bobby Jacques, superintendent of executive services for the 66th Air Base Wing, and coordinator for the park services.

There are currently 61 heroes memorialized with a bronze plaque and a tree planted in their honor. "The park reminds us of the values and ideals for which that individual stood. Those to whom this honor is bestowed, often went beyond the call of duty in their daily lives," Mr. Jacques said.

This year's nominations are now being accepted and anyone at Hanscom can be a nominee. Nominations need to be submitted no later than June 19 and be based on the individual's contributions to the Hanscom community.
