HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- June has arrived and, finally, some sunshine, as well. It is time to head outdoors and enjoy yourself. Pull out the bikes, the boats and the barbecues. Enjoy the warm weather and celebrate the end of school, graduations and new beginnings that come with the PCS season.

But wait, have you ever heard of the 101 Critical Days of Summer? This is the time from Memorial Day to Labor Day where injury and death historically increase due to careless behavior both among Airmen and their families.

As Airmen, there are times when we must accept risk as part of what we do. It is a part of our responsibility as we engage the enemy and fight our nation's wars. As warriors, it is our duty to professionally manage this risk at the right level of leadership. However, as individuals, the "right level of leadership" is the one who looks back at you in the mirror each morning. We are all personally responsible for our actions.

I urge you each to use your training, sound judgment and simple common sense to enjoy the summer months in a safe manner. Do not allow you or your family members to become a statistic.
