HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – As summer winds down and a new school year approaches, safety and school officials here remind the community to take extra precautions while driving.

Students will return to the Hanscom Middle and Primary Schools on Sept. 1, and motorists will see an increase in foot, bike and vehicle traffic around the schools and base housing.

“It’s important that we plan our morning commutes accordingly,” said Tech. Sgt. Alexander Stavrinos, noncommissioned officer in charge of Occupational Safety here. ”Rushing because you got caught behind a school bus can create a hazardous situation for everyone.”

He also emphasized the importance of motorists stopping for school bus loading and off-loading as appropriate, adhering to posted speed limits, and how inclement weather affects a vehicle’s stop time.

“As always, we remind anyone on base to avoid distracted driving, and to take extra vigilance in school zones,” said Stavrinos.

Parents are also encouraged to emphasize the importance of crosswalks, and ensure children know the rules for riding a bike on base, including the use of a helmet and reflective gear.

“Safety remains a top priority for us as we transition everyone back into the school year routine,” said Lauren Wironen, school liaison officer here. “We’re looking forward to a great year, where we can all do our part to provide a safe environment.”
