HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- Volunteers from the Hanscom Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility Cell will host a Holocaust Remembrance Day event at the Minuteman Commons here and virtually April 21 at 11:30 a.m.

Rita Goldberg, an author, professor at Harvard University, and a second-generation Holocaust survivor, will serve as the guest speaker.

“This is an incredible opportunity to hear from someone who has these stories and experiences so close to them,” said Tech. Sgt. Gregory Honadle, co-coordinator for the event. “As years go by, it gets easier to lose stories like this to time so it’s important to listen and learn now.”

Goldberg will share how her mother, a Jewish Holocaust survivor, evaded capture throughout World War II, and how those experiences shaped Rita’s upbringing and outlook on life.

“It’s somber, but it’s such an important piece of history,” said Tech. Sgt. Luis Veliz, co-coordinator for the event. “I’m looking forward to hearing about her family’s strength and resiliency.”

Coordinators said the event is open to all members of the Hanscom community.

“While I don’t have any personal connections to the Holocaust, I didn’t want to miss an opportunity to hear this story and broaden my own perspective and understanding of its history,” said Tech. Sgt. Jonah Cornwell, co-coordinator for the event.

Individuals interested in participating can also attend via Zoom at www.zoomgov.com/j/1607283425.

In further recognition of Holocaust remembrance, installation commander Col. Katrina Stephens will formally designate the week of April 24 to May 1 as Days of Remembrance in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, and in honor of the survivors, during a proclamation signing April 20.
