HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – The Hanscom Women’s Forum will recognize the contributions of women past and present throughout March as part of Women’s History Month.

Members of the forum will host several events to share information and resources that highlight the accomplishments of women throughout history and beyond. Events are open to all members with base access.

The 2023 theme is “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories.”

“This month is a chance for us to look at the history of our Air Force, and workforce, and the women who have been a part of making it what it is now,” said Jackie Farrell, Hanscom Women’s Forum co-lead.

Forum members will host a book reading at the Hanscom Primary School, with a focus on contributions by women to science, technology, engineering, and math.

“I’m looking forward to bringing that exposure to our children and sharing all the different things they can become, no matter who they are,” said Jenn Sablak, Hanscom Women’s Forum co-lead.

Base personnel are also invited to wear purple on March 8 to commemorate the month’s observance.

A viewing for the documentary “The Codebreaker” is planned for March 21 at the Brown Conference Room from 10 to 11:30 a.m. with discussion to follow. Attendees can also watch the documentary on their own and join the conversation virtually via Teams.

The documentary chronicles the story of Elizabeth Smith Friedman, a cryptanalyst who decoded thousands of messages for the U.S. government.

“The discussions are always so rewarding,” said Farrell. “I enjoy hearing everyone’s perspectives on recognizing which doors have been opened, and how we can continue these women’s legacies.”

Farrell said organizers are also planning “Unleash Your Inner Superhero,” a self-defense class, slated for March 23. Event details and registration information for the self-defense class to come.

“It will be a great workout; part motivation, part celebration of our strength,” she said.
