HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- The 66th Security Forces Squadron will host National Night Out Aug. 29 from 3 to 8 p.m. at Memorial Park here for members of the base community.

The annual nationwide event serves as a platform for communities and law enforcement agencies to come together to promote safe neighborhoods and partnerships.

“National Night Out is an exceptional opportunity for SFS defenders to connect with the community we serve,” said Staff Sgt. Logan Clark, event organizer. “We’re excited to showcase our dedication to safeguarding the installation and its residents while enjoying an evening of fun.”

The event is open to all with base access, including those living in family housing, retirees and the workforce.

Activities include an inflatable bounce castle, face painting station, corn hole, mini horse and much more. Various military, state and local civilian law enforcement entities will be on hand to display their capabilities and equipment.

According to the National Night Out website, communities from all fifty states, U.S. territories and military bases worldwide participate in the annual event.

Members of 66 SFS Booster Club and other base private organizations will be selling food and drinks during the event. There will be hot dogs, burgers, nachos, and more, according to Clark.

Law enforcement officials held the first National Night Out in 1984. The event involved 2.5 million neighbors across 400 communities in 23 states. However, the event soon grew to a celebration beyond just front porch vigils, according to the organization’s website. Neighborhoods across the nation began to host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and more.

Hanscom Air Force Base began hosting this community event annually in 2018.
