HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – Base officials will host an Air Force 76th birthday celebration at the Minuteman Commons here Sept. 18 at 3 p.m.

The free event will include short presentations highlighting Air Force history since 1947.

“As we celebrate the Air Force’s birthday, let us also remember that at Hanscom Air Force Base, history tells a tale of excellence,” said Chief Master Sgt. Alan Weary, installation command chief. “Team Hanscom has played - and still plays - a critical role in acquiring vital warfighting systems, ensuring our Air Force remains at the forefront of defense innovation.”

The theme for the event is “76 Years Around the Sun.”

Among those invited to attend is Ralph Dionne, a Berlin Airlift veteran, who participated in more than 60 supply missions during the airlift.

“The celebration promises to be a memorable one, complete with cake, camaraderie and a journey through the annals of the Air Force’s storied past,” said Master Sgt. Lesli Pape, event organizer.

The Air Force is the youngest of all five branches. It became a separate service on Sept. 18, 1947, after President Harry S. Truman signed the National Security Act of 1947.

All with installation access are invited.
