Hanscom's Workplace Initiative (also known as "Hanscom Pride"), dedicated to improving the work environment for employees, will begin focusing its efforts on a new round of workplace improvements. The ESC Corporate Board has allocated $447,000 for the Workplace Initiative projects.

Workplace is one of the "Five W's" identified by Electronic Systems Center Commander Lt. Gen. Chuck Johnson, which also include Warfighter, Workforce, Workload, and Worktools. These five priorities help focus not only the allocation of resources, but the concentration of effort and management oversight throughout the center.

"The workplace initiative is dedicated to improving the workplace for Hanscom's employees. This is critical because, as General Johnson has said, a quality work environment is a cornerstone to organizational success," said Col. Tom Schluckebier, 66th Air Base Wing commander.

These projects address work environment issues and directly affect the morale of our Hanscom employees Colonel Schluckebier said.

"Everyone deserves a professional looking place to work, and we're trying to ensure that's the case at Hanscom, given the tight budget," said Maj. Gen. Art Rooney, Electronic Systems Center Vice Commander and the Corporate Board chair.

The O'Neil Auditorium in Building 1612 is just one of the areas that will receive some much needed aesthetic improvements such as new seating, carpeting, ceiling and a fresh coat of paint.

Other projects that will be completed include installing better ventilation systems in the bathrooms of building 1624 and 1630, as well as a restroom renovation in building 1612; moving the main entrance proxy card reader in front of building 1612 to inside the front entrance vestibule; replacement of carpets in building 1614 and in the front hallway of the Hanscom Library; repair electrical power outlets in cubicle spaces in building 1618; vinyl cover replacement on the main stairwell in building 1624 and a new emergency door and life safety hardware will be installed in building 1614.

"We expect that work will begin on some of the easier projects around the end of October," said Chris Perkins, Base Civil Engineer. "The overall effort to complete these projects will continue into 2008."

The role of facility managers remains very important in maintaining base facilities, Mr. Perkins said.

"The facility managers are the ones who call the CE Help Desk with work that needs to be done. They are the facility representatives who act as our eyes and ears in ensuring the base is properly maintained," Mr. Perkins said. "We encourage people to speak up if they have suggestions on improvements or initiatives that they would like to see considered for the Workplace Initiative program."
