Local ceremonies to honor veterans

Team Hanscom personnel are invited to attend Veterans Day observances being held here and in the neighboring communities Nov. 9 thru 11.

The base will host a Salute to Veterans ceremony Nov. 9 at 8:30 a.m. at the conference center. This year’s ceremony will feature Col. Taona Enriquez, installation commander, as the guest speaker.

In addition to the Hanscom observance, the following are a sampling of the various events taking place in the local area.

Concord Veterans Day Flag Retirement Ceremony

The town of Concord will host their annual Veterans Day flag retirement ceremony at 8 a.m. at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. The ceremony will begin with a parade, which will assemble at the Pritchard Gate entrance on Bedford Street at 7:45 a.m.

During the ceremony, the Concord Fire Department will retire worn American flags collected from Concord residents.

Lexington Veterans Day Ceremony

Lexington will host a Veterans Day Ceremony Nov. 11 beginning at 11 a.m. at Cary Hall, 1605 Massachusetts Avenue. Lt. Col. Ian Coleman, deputy director of Contracting for the Command, Control, Communications, Intelligence and Networks Directorate at Hanscom will represent the installation at the event.

According to the town’s website, Sheila Widnall, former Secretary of the Air Force and MIT Emeritus Professor of Aeronautics and Aerodynamics, is slated to deliver the keynote address.

The ceremony program includes an honor guard procession led by the Lexington Minute Men and Lexington Scouts, an opening prayer and benediction, a 10-minute slide show of veterans, and the Lexington High School Band performing traditional service songs.

Bedford Veterans Day Ceremony

Bedford’s annual Veterans Day ceremony will take place Nov. 11 at noon at Veterans Memorial Park on Great Road. Hanscom’s Deputy Commander Lt. Col. Richard Baysinger will represent the installation at the event.

The ceremony will include remarks from local officials, a wreath-laying ceremony honoring veterans, and music by the Bedford High School Marching Band.

In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the Bedford High School auditorium.
