Hanscom teen Derrick Pizarro was recently selected as Youth of the Year for the base and competed against other Boys & Girls Club members for the Massachusetts Youth of the Year title and a $1,000 college scholarship.

As the new Youth of the Year for Hanscom's Youth Center, this 15-year-old is a true example of an extraordinary young man recognized by Boys & Girls Clubs of America for his sound character, leadership skills and willingness to give back to the community, according to Youth Center staff.

"Derrick is an exceptional young man who sets a great example for youth in our community," said Amy Wenrich, Youth Programs teen programmer, who compiled the nomination package for him after Youth Center staff voted on all the Hanscom candidates.

Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. As BGCA's premier youth recognition program, Youth of the Year recognizes outstanding contributions to a member's family, school, community and Boys & Girls Club, as well as overcoming personal challenges and obstacles. Youth of the Year encourages club members to reach their full potential by achieving academic success, leading healthy lifestyles and contributing to their communities.

Pizarro, the son of Michael and Lisa Pizarro, attends Bedford High School where he is an active athlete and serves as a peer mentor for new military students. He is an active member in the Keystone Club and Air Force Teen Council and has held office positions such as treasurer and vice president.

The exceptional teen spends several hours volunteering for the Youth Center in community events such as Family Pasta Night, the annual Walk 'n' Talk and Operation Night Hoops. Over the past few years, Pizarro ran the concession operation for the youth basketball season, worked at the teen snack bar, assisted younger youth with Power Hour homework and volunteered for Toys for Tots.

Pizarro plans to attend the University of North Carolina and study athletic training.

This outstanding youth was also recognized in June at the Air Force Youth of the Year awards ceremony. During his trip to Washington, D.C., Pizarro participated in many different activities and was able to meet with other Air Force Youth of the Year nominees. He was recognized at the Pentagon auditorium by Maj. Gen. Darren McDew.

The Hansom Youth Center is always looking for other young people of high merit who are outstanding members in their school and throughout the community to nominate as Youth of the Year. For further information, call the Youth Center at 781-225-6043.
