Teen delivers bracelets for Hanscom's deployed Published June 18, 2007 By 1st Lt. Lisa Spilinek 66th Air Base Wing Public Affairs Hanscom AFB -- Jenessa Largent, 16, visited Hanscom June 7 to deliver approximately 2,000 hand-made bracelets intended for the base's deployed servicemembers to Electronic Systems Center Vice Commander Maj. Gen. Art Rooney. The bracelets were made by students at Blanchard Middle School in Westford, Mass., where Jenessa had traveled to deliver a speech and to lead the students in making the bracelets. The bracelets are made from hemp cord; yellow beads representing 'deployment to harm's way;' and a red, white and blue heart-shaped bead representing patriotism. The Minnesota resident crafted her first bracelet in 2003 to honor her uncle, Sgt. 1st Class Mike Chamorro, who was then deployed to Iraq. She later decided to design bracelets for other deployed troops. She also established the www.harmsway4kids.com Web site where people from across the world have requested supplies to craft their own bracelets for servicemembers. "I have mailed out more than 267,000 bracelets and we get more orders [for free bracelet supplies] everyday. So far, I have orders for more than 350,000 bracelets," she said. Jenessa said she has visited military installations throughout the nation and has met with many senior leaders from every branch of service where she has received praise and sentiments of appreciation. General Rooney's response was of the same tone as he spoke to her in front of an audience of Hanscom personnel. "Having been deployed like many others here, I got a lump in my throat, the hair on the back of my neck stood up, and I think I even may have had a tear form. Your letter was inspirational and much appreciated." The bracelets delivered to General Rooney will be sent in care packages to Hanscom's deployed personnel and will be handed out to recently returned deployers during the Heroes' Homecoming June 22.
