HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass.-- Hanscom’s indoor swimming pool is closed for repairs and is expected to reopen by Jan. 31, 2018.

Force Support Squadron leadership made the decision to close the facility Oct. 27 after the pool’s heater failed earlier that month. The loss of the heater caused the pool’s water temperature to drop to an unsafe level forcing the closure.

“The pool is currently closed to all personnel,” said Christina Turmel, FSS Recreational Specialist supervisor. “We anticipate that the necessary repairs will be completed in late January and we are planning to reopen the facility then.”

Hanscom’s pool is one of only five Olympic-size pools in New England. Due to the pool’s unique size and heating requirements, the heater installation process is more complex and additional time is needed to complete this major repair.

When the facility reopens, pool staff will continue offering open and lap swimming, swim lessons and an annual pool pass program to Hanscom personnel and their families.

“To help mitigate the impacts of this closure, we will be extending pool memberships for our current members for the length of time the pool was closed,” Turmel said. “We’ll also be offering refunds or credit toward future classes for any swim lessons that were canceled due to the pool closure.”

Pool staff will minimally man the facility in the mornings throughout the closure to respond to questions and monitor the pool’s chemical levels.
