HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- With winter upon us, and many chances of snow remaining, the 66th Security Forces Squadron would like to remind personnel of the base and Massachusetts requirements with regard to vehicles and winter weather.

The 66th Air Base Group policy, and Massachusetts General Law, requires all motorists to clear snow, ice and other obstructions from their entire vehicle. This includes the windshield, hood, roof of vehicle and from headlights and taillights.

Any vehicle attempting to enter Hanscom Air Force Base found in violation of this policy must clear off their vehicle before allowed entry.

During snow removal operations on base, there will be no on-street parking on Hanscom proper or in base housing. Vehicles parked on the street can inhibit effective snow removal operations. Vehicles are subject to towing at the vehicle owner’s expense. Security Forces may issue citations when vehicles are in violation.

Before a forecasted snow or ice storm, housing officials will place signs at the entrance of housing to alert residents of snow removal operations. Once the signs are in place, it is the residents' responsibility to move their vehicles from the streets.

If housing residents are unable to use a garage or driveway, personnel may park their vehicles in the long-term parking lot adjacent to Building 1103, in the former Air Force Research Laboratory Library parking lot. Residents may only park here during the time needed to remove snow in housing.

Anyone using this parking lot must receive a parking pass from SFS in Building 1725 first. Personnel will need a valid ID and current vehicle registration. If the vehicle is not Massachusetts registered, proof of insurance is also required.

According to Massachusetts General Law, any vehicle left unattended with the keys in the ignition is illegal. Additionally, as long as the vehicle key is not in the ignition, vehicles may be remotely started and left idling for a duration of no longer than five minutes. Motorists found in violation may receive a monetary fine or points toward base driving revocation.

As always, the goal of SFS is to ensure the safety and security of all personnel on Hanscom AFB. Please use caution while traveling around New England, enjoying the winter season.
