HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – Hanscom’s Information Protection Office will host an Insider Threat Seminar May 23 at 1 p.m. at the Hanscom Conference Center here for Department of Defense employees.

According to DOD Directive 5205.16, an insider threat is someone who will use her or his authorized access, wittingly or unwittingly, to do harm to the security of the United States.

FBI Special Agent Scott McGaunn, the event’s guest speaker, will discuss the American Superconductor case.

“Special Agent McGaunn’s presentation will discuss the case from inception to final economic impact,” said Deborah Detora, 66th Air Base Group Information Protection director.

Insider threat falls into three categories:

Malicious – Actions are purposeful to either harm networks or extract proprietary/sensitive/classified information for economic or personal gain.

Negligent – Actions, although non-intentional, result in harm because of disregard to security policies.

Infiltrators – External actors who obtain legitimate access without authorization.

“All three categories are interrelated, producing the same level of harm,” said Detora.

Attendees have the opportunity to earn continuous learning points.
