HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – The Department of the Air Force announces the availability of a draft Environmental Assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact for addressing shoreline erosion on Air Force property at the Fourth Cliff Recreation Area in Scituate, Massachusetts.
The Preferred Alternative would stabilize the coastal bank of Fourth Cliff Recreation Area, as well as cut and vegetate the top of the bank and repair damaged infrastructure.
The work would regrade up to 1,300 feet of coastal bank and install a composite shore protection structure and vegetation to stabilize the bank.
According to Civil Engineering officials, the protection structure would be located as far landward as possible using a sloped riprap revetment (semi hardened coastal bank) topped with vegetation and drainage improvements.
The improvements would ensure that personnel using the facility do not encounter unsafe conditions. In addition, the improvements would also protect historic properties eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
The draft EA and FONSI address potential impacts of the Preferred Alternative and two other alternatives on the natural and man-made environments. Impacts related to the Preferred Alternative are anticipated to be less than significant. Use of Best Management Practices in the Draft EA and FONSI would further reduce impacts.
Copies of the Draft EA and FONSI are available for review and download.
The 66th Civil Engineering Division does not provide hardcopies. Anyone without internet access is encouraged to contact his or her local library for assistance in downloading the document.
