HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – The U.S. Air Force is observing Energy Action Month throughout October with the 2019 theme of “Energy Able – Mission Capable” to highlight the critical role energy plays in everyday operations.
The 66th Civil Engineering Division here is leading local efforts in hope of inspiring everyone who works and lives in the Hanscom community to commit to the continual and sustainable change in both organizational and personal energy use.
“Our goal is to become more resilient when it comes to using energy,” said Chinh Phan, Hanscom’s installation energy manager.
Throughout October, the 66 CED will send out helpful tips to conserve energy and conduct after-hours sweeps of the installation to gauge how energy is conserved.
“During our energy sweeps, we’ll see what in the buildings have been turned off or left on,” said Phan. “From there, we’ll work with the facility managers and make recommendations on how the organization can be more energy resilient.”
Energy action officers will also host an informational booth at the Base Exchange to provide info on how to conserve energy at home. Efforts can range from switching out lightbulbs with more efficient bulbs to installing solar panels across a roof.
Through Energy Action Month, Phan and his team hope to change the fundamental values of consumer perception by eliminating waste and promoting energy and water use awareness.
“Something as small as using the natural light in the room can make a big difference,” said Phan. “When you want to be energy efficient, small things like that add up.”
