HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – Starting in 2020, Hanscom AFB will no longer host an on-base tax center.

Alternative options are still available to assist military personnel in filing, such as Military OneSource, which offers access to a no-cost online tax filing service.

This service allows eligible members to complete and electronically file federal and up to three state tax returns. Military OneSource also offers access to free tax advice from military tax consultants who are available to assist throughout the year.

Military OneSource services are available to all active duty, National Guard and Reserve members, regardless of activation status, and Coast Guard members activated as part of the Department of the Navy under Title 10 authority. The services are also available to spouses, some dependent children and parents, and eligible retired and separated members. Access to Military OneSource is available via the website www.militaryonesource.mil; or at 800-342-9647.

Retirees not eligible for Military OneSource services may be eligible to file federal taxes for free through other commercial tax services available to the general public. In addition to other commercial tax filing services, the Internal Revenue Service offers “Free File,” a no-cost service that offers federal tax preparation and electronic filing option for all taxpayers. Personnel may also qualify for free tax preparation services through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs provided by the IRS. To find these free IRS programs near your location, please visit Military OneSource or the IRS website at www.irs.gov.

The Hanscom Legal Office is available to assist active duty service members, ranks E-4 through E-1, with any tax related questions during normal legal assistance hours.

Hours are Mondays from 1 to 3 p.m.; Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m.; and Thursdays from 9 to 11 a.m.

Appointments are required. To schedule, contact the Legal Office at 781-225-1410.
