HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- The Hanscom Chief’s Group recognized the newest chief master sergeant during an induction ceremony at the Minuteman Commons here April 29.

Chief Master Sgt. Rebecca Marrs, 66th Medical Squadron Operations Flight superintendent, was officially promoted during the ceremony and will wear the rank beginning May 1.

“I will wear this stripe as proudly and distinctly as I can, and I will do right by it,” she said.

Chief Master Sgt. Michael Daly, interim installation command chief and keynote speaker for the event, noted that the promotion came as the culmination of years of dedication and hard work.

“You don’t just wake up one day as a chief,” he said. “This promotion is an acknowledgement to the sacrifice and commitment that you’ve exhibited throughout your career.”

The event was held as the installation continued to operate under COVID-19 restrictions. Organizers limited participants to ensure physical distancing requirements and recorded the ceremony for extended family members and colleagues to view virtually.

The ceremony included lighting an inclined row of candles, a tradition of chief inductions that signifies the path of enlisted ranks. Marrs was called upon to light the last candle, signifying the rank of E-9.

“The eight other candles allow us to reflect on the journey that’s brought you to this moment, with each rank lighting the way to the top,” said Daly.

Col. Chad Ellsworth, installation commander and honorary chief, addressed Marrs’ husband and daughter, who were in attendance.

“Thank you for the love and support that you’ve not only shown for your mom, but for your nation,” he said.

Marrs accepted the charge to epitomize the finest qualities of a military leader, to strive for further development of her own leadership skills, and to be a key mentor to subordinate enlisted members.

“It’s a great pleasure to welcome you to the arena you were born to fight in,” said Daly to Marrs. “Welcome to the one percent.”

Marrs, addressing those in attendance, said she was grateful for the opportunity to serve at Hanscom, and felt it was exactly where she was meant to serve at this point in her career.
