HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- The Department of the Air Force announces the availability of a draft Environmental Assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact for proposed installation development at Hanscom Air Force Base located in the towns of Bedford, Lexington and Lincoln, Massachusetts.

The purpose of this action is to continue supporting the evolving military mission at Hanscom AFB and to maintain adequate facilities for personnel. The Air Force anticipates numerous construction and demolition projects on the installation in the coming years. The ability of Hanscom to support current and future missions requires a coordinated long-range, fence-to-fence analysis to support the efficient implementation of future projects. Thus, the Air Force is analyzing the potential environmental impacts of future development within the main base and the 66th Force Support Squadron-run FamCamp areas in this EA.

The draft EA, prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act, Council on Environmental Quality regulations and Air Force instructions implementing NEPA, evaluates potential impacts of the Proposed Action and alternatives on the environment including the “No Action Alternative.”

Based on this analysis, the Air Force has prepared a proposed FONSI. The Air Force seeks public comments on the draft EA and draft FONSI and will consider all input received before reaching a final decision.

Copies of the Draft EA and FONSI are available for review and download.

Anyone without internet access is encouraged to contact their local library or city hall for assistance in downloading the document. The 66th Civil Engineering Division will consider requests for hardcopies on a case-by-case basis.

For any additional questions concerning the Draft EA and FONSI, contact the Environmental Office at Hanscom AFB at 781-367-7168.

The Air Force is aware of the potential impact of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic on the usual methods of access to information and ability to communicate, such as the mass closure of local public libraries and challenges with the sufficiency of an increasingly-overburdened internet. The Air Force seeks to implement appropriate additional measures to ensure that the public and all interested stakeholders have the opportunity to participate fully in this EA process. Accordingly, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at the email address or telephone number provided above; we are available to discuss and help resolve issues involving access to the draft EA and Proposed FONSI, or the ability to comment.

Provide written comments to Scott Sheehan, 66 ABG/CEIE, 120 Grenier Street, Hanscom AFB, MA 01731 or emailed to scott.sheehan.1@us.af.mil. Officials will accept written comments on the draft EA and FONSI through July 13.
