HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – Military Working Dog Frenky retired during a ceremony here Sept. 11 after eight years of service as a 66th Security Forces Squadron patrol explosive detection dog.
During his time at Hanscom, Frenky supported hundreds of local security missions and two combat-related deployments.
“When a war dog locates a bomb, it isn’t covered on the news or in the paper and chances are no one will know about it,” said Maj. Shane Watts, 66 SFS commander. “However, the handlers know, and the defenders whose lives were saved know.”
Watts presented MWD Frenky with an Air Force Achievement Medal for meritorious service and Staff Sgt. Matthew Ramon, 66 SFS kennel master, presented him with a new collar and leash to symbolize his transition to civilian life.
Frenky has been adopted by a previous handler.
“We’re sad to see Frenky go, but we’re glad to see him leaving happy and healthy,” said Ramon. “He’ll get to live out the rest of his days on the couch.”
The ceremony concluded with a celebratory meal for Frenky.
“MWD Frenky, thank you for all your hard work and dedication,” said Staff Sgt. Graciela Correa, emcee for the event. “May you enjoy your everlasting days of freedom after your honorable service to the U.S. Air Force.”
