HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – Volunteers from the Retiree Activities Office here continue to offer support to military retirees across the local area remotely during COVID-19.

The Hanscom RAO provides information, services and programs to military retirees of all ranks and services. The team’s 30 volunteers act as the liaison between the retiree community and organizations that directly impact their benefits.

“We’ve had to stand down from offering in-person and walk-in services, because our staff, as well as our main demographic of clientele, are considered high-risk,” said retired Marine Corps Capt. Dean Mottard, Hanscom’s RAO director. “We’re still working to get the word out to our community.”

Mottard said the best way to reach his team is via RAO.Hanscom.AFB@gmail.com, as they’re unable to answer their office phone. He explained that even while working remotely, he and other volunteers are available to answer any questions retirees may have.

“There are so many things happening and changing in the world, we want to keep everyone in the loop,” said Mottard. “Not for just the member, but their spouses and families who can also be affected by their benefits.”

Following the cancellation of the 2020 Retiree Appreciation Day last spring, Mottard said his team is working harder than ever to connect retirees directly to the organizations they need.

“A lot of times, members have to work their way through a web of automated phone trees,” he said. “Our staff has a list of names and numbers that ring on desks, and we can help connect people to the resources they need.”

While it’s hard work, Mottard said that helping his fellow retirees continues to be a fulfilling mission.

“Helping others is so uplifting, especially other retirees,” he said. “It’s a commonality that you don’t often find and a familiar sense of comradery.”
