HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – The Hanscom Warhawk First Sergeant Council here will host a base-wide cleanup event April 15 from 12 to 3 p.m.

Volunteers will assist in picking up trash and debris from around the Commissary and Exchange, dormitories, base parks and housing.

“This event is a great way to get outside and give back to the base,” said Master Sgt. Anthony Poulin, organizer for the initiative.

Poulin said he was inspired to plan the base-wide cleanup after he and his family made an effort to pick up debris during their own walks through base housing last spring, and they saw how much accumulated during the winter months.

Now a year later, Poulin wants to get a head start on clean up before the warmer weather arrives.

“With the snow finally melting, we have a chance to start the spring and summer with a clean slate,” he said. “The best part about volunteering for a project like this is you can immediately see how you’ve made a difference.”

While the event is open to anyone who wants to participate, organizers said Hanscom residents and employees can pitch in around their individual buildings.

“Pitching in around our parking lots and taking care of the outside of our facilities can go a long way in making our base look nice after the winter storms,” said Chief Master Sgt. William Hebb, installation command chief.

The tangible results of the event are not the only benefit Poulin said he believes the results of the event will impact more than just the current volunteers.

“Keeping the environment clean for generations to come is something I’m very passionate about, and I feel that’s something we can all get behind,” he said.
