HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- The 66th Civil Engineering Division will oversee a full-scale repaving of Vandenberg Drive here April 25 through 30.

According to base engineers, the project will be completed in three phases and include a gate closure. Base personnel can expect detours and delays throughout the construction period.

“This repaving is just part of the routine maintenance we do across the base to ensure everything is working and sustained properly,” said Sabrina Tytula, a civil engineer here.

Phase 1 is slated for April 25 to 30. Vandenberg Drive will be closed from Eglin Street to Marrett Street, and traffic will be rerouted via Arnold Street.

“The intersection of Vandenberg Drive and Eglin Street will remain open at all times throughout construction for access to the Child Development Center and Hanscom Clinic,” said Tytula.

Phase 2 is slated for April 27 to 29. The portion of Vandenberg Drive leading up to Eglin Street will remain open, but traffic will be pushed to one side of the road at a time while inbound and outbound lanes are repaired.

Officials said some open lanes will likely be unfinished, and motorists may have to drive over compacted gravel until paving is compete.

“We will have flaggers posted on either side of the construction site to help direct traffic,” said Tytula.

Phase 3 is slated for April 29 to 30, and includes a complete shutdown of Vandenberg Drive to Marrett Street, and also the Sartain Gate and Visitors Center to allow for final paving work.

Beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 29, until 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, all base access, including commercial vehicles, will be through the Ruiz Gate.

Officials say the schedule of paving is subject to change due to weather.

“We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation while we work to make the repairs,” said Tytula.
