Calling all artists! Are you an artist looking for your next project? The 66th Air Base Group is looking for your input and design ideas for a new commander’s challenge coin.

“Designing our challenge coin is a way to tell our unique story here at Hanscom,” said 2nd Lt. Alyssa Sanchez, project officer assigned to the 66th Force Support Squadron.

Submissions are due by July 22.

The base has a long history, beginning in World War II as part of the Army Air Forces. Since 1942, the base has transitioned from operating fighter and cargo units, to supporting radar and reconnaissance aircraft, and eventually moving away from an installation supporting aircraft to one of development, acquisition and sustainment.

The goal of the new coin is to incorporate that long heritage and highlight Hanscom’s unique units and mission, according to Sanchez.

Although the history of military challenge coins is widely debated, there is no doubt they are a significant part of military culture. Challenge coins display commendable service, long-standing legacy and support unit morale.

Gifting a coin extends an appreciation or, “thank you,” from one member to another. Each one gives a personal touch of recognition.

“It is an honor to receive a challenge coin,” said Sanchez. “It boosts morale and it represents a great military tradition."
