AFMC team completes massive inspection of Hanscom

Hanscom personnel underwent a rigorous, multi-faceted inspection here June 5 through 14.

While the Air Force Materiel Command inspection team is putting the final touches on the report, the team clearly put Hanscom through the paces during the Consolidated Unit Inspection, which touched all major AFMC units on base.

A CUI, by definition, consolidates numerous individual inspections for efficiency. In this case, the inspection team tested base readiness - both local emergency management and deployers' ability to survive and operate, or ATSO - much as would occur in a traditional Operational Readiness Inspection. The team also conducted detailed compliance inspections, as well as a Logistics Compliance Assessment Program review and a thorough Article Six inspection, which examined the 66th Air Base Group's Judge Advocate Office's ability to provide comprehensive legal services. Inspectors also looked at several specific focus areas.

Some members of the inspection team began arriving at Hanscom June 5, and by early the next morning Hanscom was thrust into exercise mode, responding to active shooter and other incidents. On June 7, the inspection team focused primarily on ATSO, as Hanscom deployers demonstrated their skills at Camp Patriot.

The inspectors devoted most of the week of June 10 to the comprehensive compliance inspections, as well as the LCAP and Article Six reviews. These large-scale efforts involved dozens of inspectors who spanned the base, meeting with personnel, reviewing checklist items and poring over reams of documentation.

Hanscom personnel made it easier for the team to undertake this massive effort, said AFMC Inspector General Col. Russell Kurtz.

"The warm welcome and professionalism of Team Hanscom tremendously facilitated the successful completion of the inspection team's goals," he said. "Despite numerous organizational transitions and budget limitations compounded by sequestration, the AFMC/IG team witnessed many outstanding Airmen performing above and beyond, developing innovative solutions and producing highly effective weapon systems for the warfighter."

While the team did document numerous findings, as would be expected in the course of such an encompassing inspection, the colonel said his team was impressed by much of what it witnessed.

"It is clear that Team Hanscom is working extremely hard in a very challenging environment," Kurtz said.

The IG team also recognized an extensive list of outstanding performers and teams.
