The 66th Medical Squadron will celebrate National Nurse's Week beginning May 6 and culminate on Florence Nightingale's birthday, May 12. The theme of this year's nurse's week is "Delivering Quality and Innovation in patient care."

Florence Nightingale was called the year after the Crimean War began to gather a team of nurses to attend to the wounded and sick British soldiers. One of the many great innovations she carried out and is remembered was simply by delivering compassionate care and comfort to wounded British soldiers as she walked in dark hallways with her lamp.

She is credited with reducing the hospital's death rate by two-thirds.

The theme reflects the essence of the nursing practice and the purpose why so many have chosen this path like Florence Nightingale.

"As medical professionals, we strive to maintain and improve the standards initiated many years ago," said Capt. Mirna R. Cuellar, Family Practice nurse. "We practice in diverse settings and carry a wealth of experience into each endeavor."

The 14 nurses and 20 medical technicians within the 66th Medical Squadron have served around the world, with more than 250 years of experience. Each continue to strive to deliver quality patient care.
