The Ghost Army, a documentary film about a very special and unique World War II unit, will be shown in the Hanscom Conference Center April 22 at 2:30 p.m. Following the screening, filmmaker Rick Beyer will answer questions about his documentary, which tells the true story of American G.I.s who duped Hitler's army during the Second World War.

Directed by Lexington filmmaker and author Rick Beyer, The Ghost Army recounts a secret mission that was a juxtaposition of the absurd and deadly. During World War II, the 23rd HQ Special Troops used inflatable tanks, sound effects and impersonation to stage a traveling road show of deception, with the German army as the audience. Many of the men were artists, including some who earned postwar fame, such as fashion designer Bill Blass.

Beyer's documentary features interviews with 19 veterans of the unit, as well as retired Gen. Wesley Clark, former Commander of NATO, and other experts. Emmy award winning actor Peter Coyote narrates. The independently produced documentary has been eight years in the making and was funded by contributions from more than 600 donors. More information about the film is available at www.ghostarmy.org.

The film recently won the Audience Award at the sixth annual Salem Film Fest, voted best film at the festival by audience ballot. It has also been selected to screen this May at the GI Film Festival in Washington, D.C. Later in May it will air nationally on PBS stations, including WGBH in Boston.

This free event is part of the Heritage of Freedom series and is sponsored by the Hanscom Federal Credit Union. The entire Hanscom community is invited to attend.
