A Hanscom civilian, Matthew Deutsch, was honored with a significant award during the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association international conference held in San Diego last month.

Deutsch, deputy of Business Operations for Air Operations Center Modernization, received the Distinguished Young AFCEAN Award for the New England Region for his outstanding contributions to AFCEA's Lexington-Concord Chapter.

He was cited specifically for expanding the chapter's "Rocket Box" program to three schools in the Hanscom Air Force Base area. Rocket Box is a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) initiative that provides middle school participants with necessary resources to hold a week of rocketry at their school. This gives them hands-on experience in the interdisciplinary aspects of science and math, and has positively impacted more than 200 students.

Deutsch also volunteered more than 100 hours of his time on various events, including organizing volunteers and judging the Massachusetts State MathCounts competition, another STEM-centric endeavor.

"Matt Deutsch's enthusiasm for mentorship knows no bounds, and his professionalism in this area has had a most positive impact on our chapter's operations," said Lexington-Concord Chapter President Scott Hardiman.

A former Hanscom employee, Capt. Charles O'Connor, was also honored with the Emerging Leadership Award for his outstanding contributions to the chapter.

AFCEA is a non-profit association serving the military, government, industry and academia as an ethical forum for advancing professional knowledge and relationships in the fields of communications, information technology, intelligence and global security.
