Over the last few months, the 66th Force Support Squadron has been busy transforming programs and services in response to Air Force Global Base Support initiatives. Officials from 66 FSS have implemented initial plans to transform the former library, current bowling center and former lodging area in Building 1427 to host relevant programs and services, supportive of the Hanscom community.

"We are leading the way in a new phase of services transformation and we are really excited about it," said Vic Hayes, 66 FSS director. "This phase includes repurposing facilities, along with combining and partnering synergistic services and functions in locations that will improve delivery and expand opportunities for base personnel and residents."

Resiliency Center
The transformation of Hanscom Lanes to a new resiliency center is well underway. The former dining space has a new look and now hosts spin classes.

"There will also be an individual or small group exercise room where patrons can do P90X, Insanity, workout DVDs and other individual workout plans," said Carolyn McCafferty, 66 FSS Operations officer. "To round out the fitness aspect of resiliency, we are opening the resiliency relaxation room, which has three professional grade massage chairs, individual Bose sound systems and an environment where folks can decompress."

Every inch of the resiliency center will provide valued space and services to the community, squadron officials report. The information learning center will have a satellite computer lab in the back of the bowling center.

"We've heard from folks around the base that maintaining a computer lab in this area, close to housing and fitness, provides a needed service," Hayes said. "However, our implementation plan will require set up, so some services will be temporarily provided in alternate locations until we are fully able to open the repurposed space for base personnel."

Bowling is still available for league and individual play.

Information Learning Center (ILC)
The ILC concept will maintain several components of the former library. There will be two computer labs on base: the satellite lab at the resiliency center and a more comprehensive computer lab located in Building 1427, the former lodging front desk area.

"The hub for the ILC lab will be in The Minuteman Commons and adjacent to Building 1427," said McCafferty. "By co-locating on the Commons campus, the ILC will offer an 'internet café' type environment using the Wi-Fi and issued lap tops for patrons who might not have their own computer or smart devise. Additionally, there will be a hard-wired computer lab with Wi-Fi in Building 1427. Best of all, patrons will have access to this resource 24/7."

The ILC will also provide magazines in addition to resource and referral materials for off-base library services, programs and classes.

Other ILC programs and services available on base are voluntary education services such as Rosetta Stone language instruction, Chief of Staff of the Air Force Reading List material, CLEP/DANTES tests and voluntary educational materials.

"These are currently located at the Education and Training Center in Building 1728 and are available Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m." said McCafferty. "And don't forget the children's library, children's story hour and youth reading materials are now located in the Youth Center."

To implement the changes in facility use, the ILC computer labs will not be available until Nov. 5. In the interim, patrons are directed to use the computer resources lab available at the Airman and Family Readiness Center Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

"The Air Force GBS reductions have been levied from the top down, but we believe that the consolidating and thoughtful location of these programs and services will provide our community with resources to help FSS continue to make Hanscom a great place to live, work and play," Hayes said. "Transformation is a continual process that involves our entire community. It's the grass roots that drive transformation's capability to reach its fullest potential."
