Hanscom captain wins CGO of the Year Published Aug. 1, 2012 By Tech. Sgt. Jennifer Foster 66th Air Base Group Public Affairs HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- One of Hanscom's very own captains has won the 2011 Air Force Materiel Command Distinguished Company Grade Officer of the Year award. Capt. Sunil Nair won at the AFMC level after first being recognized as the 2011 CGO of the year for his division, then continuing on to win at the former Electronic Systems Center. "His thorough preparation and drive to succeed have led him to be extremely successful in a short period of time," said his supervisor, Dr. Joseph Delaney Jr. Nair has a long list of accomplishments that include being a mentor and tutor. "My community service activities were some of my proudest achievements," said Nair. "I served as a mentor to a nine year old as part of the Boston Big Brother program. This involved spending time with my little brother every week and assisting him as needed." Nair attended his little brother's basketball games, helped him with his homework and took him out to enjoy social activities. "This was an opportunity for me to give back to those who are less fortunate and I am proud to have been part of the BBB program," he said. In addition to using his people skills as a big brother, Nair tapped into his knowledge and experience to tutor a Marine staff sergeant while deployed to Afghanistan. "It was an online class and the individual was worried because he did not have any prior background in statistics," said Nair. "I met with him every week for eight weeks to discuss and review his assignments. The individual ended up with an 'A' in the class and I was happy to have been part of his success." Of course, Nair also accomplished great things while performing his day-to-day duties. He is the program manager for two Advisory and Assistance Services contracts worth more than $1.5 billion. "My team and I overcame significant challenges and extended the Engineering and Technology Acquisition Support Services contract for 17 months," said Nair. "We also prevented a break in engineering services to over 250 programs across the center." Delaney says Nair sets the tone for the entire organization. "When I describe what an Air Force officer is to someone outside our gate, I describe Captain Nair," Delaney said. "As he transitions to a program manager's position in a PEO (Program Execution Office), they will be acquiring one of the best the Air Force has to offer." Nair was notified by Gen. Donald Hoffman, AFMC commander at the time, that he won at the major command level in May and considered it official when he was coined by Col. Mark Spillman, ESC commander, on July 20. "I know there are a lot of people across AFMC doing some amazing things, so I am very humbled by this recognition," he said.
