More than 80 Airmen who have returned home from deployment since January, along with their family members, will be honored during this summer's Heroes Homecoming at 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 30 in the parking lot behind the Outdoor Recreation facility.

Following Heroes Homecoming, the entire Hanscom community is invited to take part in an end-of-summer festival, called BBQ & Blues, in the same location.

The day starts when a parade kicks off at the Minuteman Commons and travels down Barksdale Street to the ceremony location. The parade will include the honorees and their families riding in Duck Boats and an appearance by Clydesdale horses, New England Patriots cheerleaders, Patriot Riders and possible sports celebrities.

"I think it's important to officially welcome home these Air Force men and women, as well as to say 'thank you' to the families for their sacrifices," said Col. Lester A. Weilacher, 66th Air Base Group commander. "I hope to see you all there."

Jonathan Elias, WBZ-TV anchor and former 66th Air Base Group honorary commander, will serve as the master of ceremonies. In addition, the Boston Red Sox will bring the 2004 and 2007 World Series trophies for display.

After the recognition ceremony, the BBQ & Blues event will feature live entertainment, line dancing, pony rides, a "fun zone" and more.

"On the festival grounds, we'll have a car show, clowns, jugglers and barbecue concessions," said Carolyn McCafferty, 66th Force Support Squadron Operations officer. "Fireworks, which are weather dependent, will conclude the event."

In addition to activities on the festival grounds, there will be free swimming at the pool from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and free bowling at Hanscom Lanes from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

"This event will have something for all ages - young, old and in between," McCafferty said. "You won't want to miss the day."

Organizations also have an opportunity to fundraise during BBQ & Blues. Private organizations may open food concessions or offer games and activities in which attendees can participate.

"We want to maximize fundraising opportunities," said McCafferty. "We have a list of suggested food and activities for anyone interested."

Private organizations may contact Kevin Kaminski via email at kevin.kaminski@hanscom.af.mil for further information about the opportunities.
