Rules for recreational motor vehicles at Hanscom Published Nov. 9, 2011 By Staff Sgt. Irasema Reed 66th Security Forces Squadron HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- In accordance with AFI 91-207, U.S. Air Force Traffic Safety Program and the Hanscom Air Force Base Rules of the Road, the operation of Recreational Motor Vehicles (RMVs) on public access roadways is strictly prohibited. Some examples of those RMVs include, but are not limited to, the following privately owned battery or fossil fuel powered motorized vehicle and devices: midget motor vehicles, non-street legal race cars, racing carts, dune buggies, go-carts, off-road motorcycles, mini-motorcycles, pocket bikes, motor scooters, motorized skateboards, snowmobiles, personal golf carts, non-government gators and utility carts and self balancing or similar standing human transportation devices. Not included in this category are motorcycles, mopeds, seated motor scooters that are in compliance with state licensing, registration and operation laws, motor assisted bicycles and motorized devices that allow handicapped individuals to move as pedestrians, such as wheelchairs. Non-motorized transportation devices such as skateboards, kick-scooters and roller skates may be used on the roadways if no sidewalk is available, but must adhere to the same rules as bicyclists. Travel on the far right side of the road with the flow of traffic and obey all traffic signals and signs, yield the right of way to pedestrians in cross walks and wear an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) or Snell Memorial Foundation (SMF) approved helmet.
