Lecture about cyber security to be held at Hanscom

HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. --  Dr. Tanya Zlateva, Associate Dean for Academics at Boston University's (BU) Metropolitan College, will deliver a lecture on Oct. 19 at the Hanscom Education and Training Center, in Classroom G, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon. The lecture topic will cover the Cyber Security research projects being conducted at Boston University and the Cyber Security education opportunities available on base through Boston University.

Dr. Zlateva, the co-founder of the Center for Reliable Information Systems and Cyber Security (RISCS) research consortium under which the research is being conducted, said that "becoming educated in topics such as cryptographic security, software certification and cloud computing is important in meeting the Department of Defense's (DoD's) ever more stringent cyber policies."

According to the doctor, Boston University is well positioned to provide this level of education as BU "has been designated by the DoD and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance education and Information Assurance research."

Dr. Zlateva said that BU was among the first to receive these designations.

Attendance is open to all active duty, guard and reserve members, family members, government employees, contractors or anyone who has access to Hanscom. Those interested in attending may RSVP to gkeegan@bu.edu.

In addition to attending the lecture, attendees may also be interested to learn about BU programs available at Hanscom. Boston University has offered graduate degree and certificate programs on base since 2004. BU's Metropolitan College military programs are on-base programs, and are available to all qualified active duty military personnel, their dependents, DoD employees and contractors who have earned a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

Graduate level degree and certificate programs are offered in computer information systems, leadership, information security and project management.

Gerard Keegan, Academic Program director for the college, said that all of the courses offered at the Hanscom Education and Training Center utilize a convenient alternate weekend format. One class is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. A second class is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The degree programs consist of ten courses and can be completed in as little as 20 months.

"A subset of the Master of Science in Computer Information Systems (MSCIS) degree program is the information security certificate, a four course program which addresses information technology (IT) security policies and procedures, database security and enterprise security," said Mr. Keegan.

All four courses can be applied to the MSCIS degree program, as well.

Registration for the fall semester's graduate programs, including the MSCIS degree, runs now through Sept. 10.
