Hanscom Olympics: friendly competition among organizations

HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. --  Hanscom military and civilian personnel will compete during the first week of May for bragging rights and to earn points for the coveted Commander's Cup trophy during the 2011 Hanscom Olympics held May 2 to 6 from 3 to 5 p.m. each day.

After the opening ceremonies on May 2, the competition opens with a formation run, followed by the Chiefs versus Eagles dodge ball game.

The activities are geared towards promoting esprit de corps and camaraderie among Hanscom personnel, according to event organizers.

"The focus of the 2011 Hanscom Olympics is fostering team building and promoting good fitness for Hanscom personnel," said Olivia Kuntz, the Fitness Center's Fitness and Programs director and Hanscom Olympics coordinator. "The work that goes into this is a lot, but the end product is well worth it and the Hanscom community benefits greatly."

Hanscom's Olympic games will feature friendly competition between the base's five main organizations: Electronic Systems Center staff, Battle Management Directorate, C2ISR Directorate, Cyber/Netcentric Directorate and the 66th Air Base Group.

For Hanscom's organizations, the competition will also be an opportunity to collect some points that will go towards the Commander's Cup.

Olympic events will include competition in a 5K run, racquetball, dodge ball, track relays, triathlon, tennis, build-a-boat, golf and tug-of-war. Events that will earn both Olympic points and Commanders Cup competition points include basketball, volleyball, track, bowling and obstacle course relays.

Each organization will designate an Olympic coach who will take responsibility for forming their directorate's Olympic team. Teams for each event must include active duty and civilians and both males and females. Coaches will have instructions for signing up their teams and the rules for engagement for each sport.

Team registrations are due by April 22. Additional information and a list of unit contacts will be printed in future issues of the Hansconian.
