Hanscom's first ever Trashy Fashion Show will take place this May. The Environmental Management System (EMS) and Youth Center have partnered for this environmental venture.

The Trashy Fashion Show is where trash will be recycled, transformed into an outfit or accessory and showcased on the catwalk. The show sets the stage for environmental awareness and offers innovative alternatives to reducing, reusing and recycling.

"EMS is excited to team up with the Youth Center for this event," said Jim Maravelias, an environmental scientist with EMS. "We think it's a way for everyone to have fun while helping the environment."

Those interested are encouraged to start saving recyclables and discarded items for an event that will be hard to miss.

Participants have less than four months to gather trash and recycle it into gorgeous "trashion." Trashion is the term used for fashion made of trash.

The concept of a Trashy Fashion Show is not new, but it is a fun and welcoming event for Hanscom, according to EMS. Entrants are encouraged to think outside of the box and canvas the realm of creativity when designing their trashion.

There is only one rule: each trashion piece must be made of at least 75 percent recycled material or discarded items.

Prizes will be awarded, with the grand prize going to the trashiest designer. This event is open to all Hanscom personnel, contractors, students, adults, organizations and groups.

The deadline for entry is April 1 and more information will be available as the date draws closer. Contact Capt. Tamala Gulley at 781-377-8095, or via e-mail at tamala.gulley@hanscom.af.mil, for additional information.
