Local celebrations held to honor veterans

HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. --  A number of Veterans Day celebrations will be taking place in the area on Nov. 11 and local town officials invite Hanscom community members to join with them as they pay tribute to veterans.

In Bedford, Veterans Day ceremonies will take place starting at 12 noon at Veterans Memorial Park, on Great Road next to the Bedford Funeral Home. In the event of inclement weather, ceremonies will move to the town hall. A memorial wreath will be presented and attendees may place a small flag at the monument to remember a special veteran.

An annual Veterans Day parade will take place in Lexington starting at 10 a.m. from the old school administration building on Massachusetts Avenue. The parade will make several stops as it makes its way to the Battle Green, placing wreaths at memorials along the route.

The town of Burlington will be holding their Veterans Day ceremony at the Burlington Town Common starting at 10 a.m. Col. Roger Thrasher, Battle Management program executive officer, will be the guest speaker.

Chief Master Sergeant Kenneth Williams, Electronic Systems Center command chief, will be representing the men and women of Hanscom at this year's Veterans Day ceremonies in the town of Tewksbury. The annual salute will begin at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 at the Tewksbury Town Common at 1009 Main Street.

In the town of Sherborn, located just south of Hanscom on Route 16, Veterans Day ceremonies will begin at 11 a.m. at the Sherborn Town Hall. Col. Dave Hiltz from the Aerial Ground Surveillance Systems Division will be a featured guest speaker.

Concord's Veterans Day flag retirement ceremony will take place starting at 8 a.m. at Pritchard's Gate. The ceremony is an annual tradition that is held each year on Veterans Day. It allows Concord residents the opportunity to retire their American flags in a respectful and appropriate manner.

All Hanscom personnel, families and friends are encouraged to take a moment on this special day and join local communities as they take time to salute America's veterans, past and present.
