It's that time again: one of those rare occasions when parents are as excited as their teenagers. Hanscom students in grades 9 through 12 enrolled at Bedford High School will return to class on Tuesday, Sept. 7. The school day will begin at 7:20 a.m. and will dismiss at 2:01 p.m.

The school has already started the new year with new student orientations, sports practices and an opening day gathering for administrators and staff.

"As summer fun and family vacations come to an end and school begins, it's important to gain information on your student's feelings of connection to the school," said Hanscom's School Liaison Officer, Ms. Lisa Pizarro. "As a parent, educator and military spouse, I understand the relationship between the parents and school is crucial to the success of children everywhere."

Ms. Pizarro, who was recently hired to help Hanscom students and parents get acclimated to a new school, said that with the frequent moves and deployments that military children must face, it's important to have someone who understands their unique circumstances.

"The BHS guidance counselor, Mr. Brian DeChellis, understands those unique challenges and offers a variety of services to support the needs of Hanscom students," she said. "I look forward to collaborating with him, as well as the families and the school community this school year."

To help stay connected, parents are encouraged to visit the high school's website at www.bedford.k12.ma.us/bhs/ and sign up for e-newsletters.

Another way to stay connected, Ms. Pizarro suggests, is through volunteering at the school. Anyone interested in volunteering to help with reading, writing and math tutorials, as well as homework or organizational skills supervision, are asked to contact Ms. Pizarro at 781-377-8874.
