Hanscom Air Force Base's Environmental Management System (EMS) program will implement three significant projects, or aspects, for 2010. One of the aspects involves asking the Hanscom community to contribute monthly discussion topics.

Annually, the Hanscom EMS volunteer cross functional team identifies efforts to simultaneously reduce costs and impacts to the environment. This year, the three selected EMS projects seek to: identify desired high-demand commuter routes for Hanscom workers; reduce consumption of copy paper; and increase awareness by publishing articles highlighting "green" topics of interest.

The EMS topic for next month will focus on one of the three aforementioned projects. Base personnel may also suggest any other topics of interest. Members of the Hanscom community are urged to e-mail the "green" topic they are interested in learning more about to james.maravelias.ctr@hanscom.af.mil with "EMS article" in the subject line. The topic with the most requests will be highlighted in upcoming months.

The Air Force EMS Program follows Executive Order 13423, "Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy, and Transportation Management." EMS includes policies, programs and processes that embrace many of the elements detailed in ISO 14001 EMS international standards.

Hanscom's cross functional EMS team, along with the identification of significant projects, is the foundation to help establish meaningful objectives and targets for Hanscom. The organization encourages everyone to be involved and provide feedback.
