Summer is quickly coming to an end and the school year is right around the corner here at Hanscom. Students will return to classes in early September, but preparations for the 2010 and 2011 school year are already underway.

School begins at 8 a.m. on Sept. 1 for students in grades one through eight. Since it is a Wednesday, dismissal that day is at 12:30 p.m. Kindergarten students begin on Thursday, Sept. 2 and go half days throughout the month.

On the first day of school, Primary School parents are invited to a Principal's Coffee after they drop their children off. It will be held in the prep room off of the front lobby.

"At Hanscom Primary School we are looking forward to the new school year with excitement and great anticipation," said Hanscom Primary School (HPS) Principal Randy Davis. "Our school theme is 'All Write' and we'll be focusing on writing and increasing our skill at communicating through the written word. We'll have a visit from a children's book author and a special night in the spring for students and their parents to enjoy some fun, 'All Write' activities."

There will also be a PTO sponsored meet and greet on Aug. 31 at 1 p.m. for grades one through eight. Class lists will be posted at the front of the school and students can see their classrooms and meet their teachers. The meet and greet for kindergarten students is on Sept. 1 at 11 a.m.

There will also be some new things in store for the upcoming school year at Hanscom. This year the Lincoln Preschool will house classes at Hanscom Primary School, serving three and four year olds. Also, all students in grades one through three will participate in weekly science enrichment classes. These classes will include many hands-on projects, including Lego engineering.

Spanish language instruction for grade three begins this year as well, with three short sessions each week. All students will see an increase in weekly time for physical education through the wellness curriculum.

Parents may want to note that there are no school supply lists for primary students. All supplies will be provided by HPS. A backpack, however, is suggested and a healthy morning snack should be packed each day.

"As the summer starts to make way for fall, I look forward to the excitement that always comes with the beginning of a new school year," said Mrs. Davis. "I look forward to seeing old friends and new as we head back to school."
